When I was thirteen, I saw Cat on a Hot Tin Roof late one night on PBS. Thus began my epic one-sided love affair with Paul Newman, despite him being old enough to be my grandpa and then some. Reasons why:
1. His filmography is incredible--Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy, Hud, to name a few. Most of today's vapid Hollywood celebs have nothing on him.
2. He was married to his equally famous wife for FIFTY(!!!) years.
3. Clearly, he was a stone cold fox (see above).
3. He was a true-blue Democrat (he made Nixon's enemies list and said it was one of his greatest accomplishments).
4. ALL of Newman's Own's profits were given away to charities--hundreds of millions of dollars since it was founded in 1982--and many people don't even know about it because he never felt the need to publicize it.
5. I've never heard anyone say anything negative about him ever.
6. He was an amazing actor, but probably an even better human being.
I doubt I'll be sadder for any other celebrity's death. Tomorrow I'm think I'm going to buy a shitload of Fig Newmans and maybe some lemonade.
Anyway, congrats on a life well-lived, Paul.
